This week is my 15th Anniversary with Dumfries and Galloway Advocacy Service. I started in 2003 as a volunteer and then successfully applied for the post of Generic Advocacy Co-ordinator in 2005, this was a role which supported our volunteers as well as working with clients who had issues with social services, education, GP’s, hospital etc. I then went on to be promoted to Chief Executive in 2011.
The years have flown by so quickly; but I am one of those lucky people who loves their job, and I know that not everyone is able to say that! The staff, volunteers and trustees that I work with are all amazing and I am proud to know each of them.
I am passionate about people having their voice heard by services and understanding what is happening within their lives and helping them to achieve the outcomes they are looking for.
When I first started with the service we were supporting between 350 to 400 people per year (around 30-35 people per month). Last month alone we supported 82 people, the most referrals we have ever had in one month; so far this year (since April) we have supported 416 people across Dumfries and Galloway.
Our service helps a client understand what might be happening in their life and take
control of their circumstances by empowering them to help themselves. We use listening skills and help a client think through their problems or find information that will help them make informed choices and decisions. Our Independent Advocates can also speak on a client’s behalf if they feel unable to do so, making sure their thoughts, feelings and wishes are fully understood by others, but also making sure they understand what may be said to them or about them.
Dumfries and Galloway Advocacy Service is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary Year and we are delivering awareness sessions across the region to both services and the public during the year, if you want us to come and speak to you service or group please get in touch.
I look forward to my next 15 years!
Pamela Deans – Chief Executive
